The Faith in History Performers study this year centers around the Industrial Revolution in 19th century England. The play based on this study develops themes common to the Victorian era such as advances in mining and manufacturing, the societal move from country to cities, poverty, work houses, child labor laws, poor sanitation and overcrowded slums all of which contributed to the creation of many orphaned children. The drama’s eponymous title, Twisted Strength: Two Men’s Efforts to help the ‘Olivers’ of the Industrial Revolution, follows the lives of two important men who lived in England during the mighty Industrial Revolution. One used the pen, the other prayer. Charles Dickens exposed to the world the plight of neglected and often abused orphans, George Müller through prayer alone received resources to build orphanages and cared for some 12,000 orphan boys and girls. The full-length drama, written by Kelsey Tombs, and with a cast of 41 Home School students, recreates historically accurate accounts from Dickens’ personal life, works including Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickelby, and Müller’s early years as an ungodly rebel, dramatic conversion and subsequent long life of 92 years serving others. This tearful drama, coupled with spots of British humor, songs and gorgeous period costumes will transport the audience to the British Isles of the 1800’s telling the story of the Industrial Revolution through the vivid lives of Charles Dickens and George Müller.
